CAMP LETTS EQUESTRIAN CENTER

horseThe YMCA Camp Letts Equestrian Center is a 15-stall barn located 30 minutes from Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. The center features miles of waterfront trails, a 100-by-220 foot lighted outdoor ring, cross country jumps, and a small sand dressage arena. The flexible program options include traditional lessons for all levels and ages 8 and up, guided trail rides, Scout badge programs, and an Equestrian Team for those with competitive aspirations.

The horses and ponies at YMCA Camp Letts are chosen specifically for their gentle, friendly natures. They can be ridden safely and are quiet and dependable both in the ring and on trails. They love attention and enjoy having their riders bring them treats — especially fresh carrots!  Come out and get to know their different personalities.

Lessons
The YMCA Camp Letts’ Equestrian facility offers Hunt Seat instruction to riders of all levels, ages 8 and up. All riders tack and groom their own mounts for lessons. Lessons are not canceled for bad weather unless severe. During bad weather, indoor ground lessons are held where riders learn equine anatomy, equine care, feeding, first aid, equitation and much more. Hour-long “Group” lessons consist of three to five riders of a similar level. Every instructor at YMCA Camp Letts is certified by Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) and holds current First Aid and CPR certifications.  Our instructors are patient and encouraging, and look forward to assisting you and your horse. They bring years of experience into the ring and are accomplished riders in their own right, competing locally and continuing their own education.

Show Team
Competitive opportunities are available for interested students of all ages. The YMCA Camp Letts’ Equestrian Team competes at schooling and rated shows.   Students must be involved in lessons and attend two weekly Team practices to attain competitive standards. Good sportsmanship, a team player attitude, and parental support are more important than actual ability. Riders are invited to compete as their ability and skill level allows. Show riders are approved by the instructor.

Trail Rides
The YMCA Camp Letts’ Equestrian Center offers miles of scenic waterfront and wooded trails for groups of 32 or more. Riders must wear long pants and closed-toed shoes.  Helmets are required and are provided. All riders must be at least 8 years of age. Trail rides include simple instruction, and must be scheduled in advance through the Equestrian Director at 410-798-5768. This is a great idea for birthday parties, class incentives, youth groups, etc.

Scout Badge Programs
YMCA Camp Letts can tailor a program for both Boy and Girl Scouts to fulfill their badge requirements. Accommodating up to 20 participants, children ages 6 and up will get the chance to ride, groom and feed the horses, tour the barn, and ask questions. They will learn about grooming tools, saddles, colors, and daily care. A picnic area is available for snacks, which the group must provide. Programs are typically scheduled Friday afternoons.

FAMILY CAMP

familyA family weekend to remember!

YMCA Camp Letts invites you, your family, and friends to venture into one of the most beautiful retreat centers in Maryland. Here you will discover a world and an atmosphere to be shared with your loved ones.  Roam over 200 acres of forest and meadows and enjoy spectacular views from the ridges along the river. Sit back and watch the lovely sunsets, explore by horseback, on foot and by canoe.  Play to your heart’s content any sport that you find challenging and comfortable. Get acquainted with other families who are seeking the peace and quiet of a camp setting.  Enjoy fabulous meals and treats from our kitchen and square dance with your family and friends. Or, just relax in the rocking chairs on the Dining Hall porch.  We invite you to make Camp Letts a “family tradition” as many families have before. We welcome you to stay with us over the Memorial Day and Labor Day Weekend.

LODGING
Family Camp offers four different styles of housing:

Letts Lodge — Letts Lodge is a two story building with 12 rooms; each furnished with two bunk beds sleeping up to four guests. Bathroom facilities are available on both levels.

Lodges — Lodges have a capacity of 24 to 28 guests in each of the 12 buildings. Each lodge is divided into three rooms. The two end rooms are dormitory–style bedrooms with either 10 or 12 beds and a bathroom. The center room is used as a common area for families to share.

Rustic Log Cabins — The Rustic cabins are within walking distance to bath facilities and all program areas.  They are situated in the woods away from the main camp. We have seven cabins with 12 built-in beds in each. They are perfect for individual families.

Tents — For a true camping experience the tenting area is about one mile from the main camp and does not have water or electricity.

DINING
Our talented food service team is always anxious to provide the best in fresh fruits, vegetables and meats. Meals are served buffet style with families seated around large, round tables. Family Campers will experience camp as they set and clear their tables. The porch running the length of the hall provides an ideal location for viewing the sunset and the beauty of the surrounding water and woodland.

CAMPING GEAR
It is necessary to bring sleeping and bath gear—a sleeping bag or twin sheets and a blanket, a pillow, towels, and bath articles. For horseback riding, you will need long pants and closed toed shoes—we provide the helmet. A flashlight, appropriate clothing for weather conditions and  a good book are suggested as well.

SCHOOLS AND CHURCHES EVENTS

Camp Letts is a great space to bring your next school or church event, in 2006 over 70 schools and churches made YMCA Camp Letts Retreat Center their destination of choice. While they were here they took advantage of our spacious meeting areas and were able to hold workshops and conduct classes both indoors and out. There were numerable groups who took part in our teambuilding workshops, braved the high ropes course or unleashed with their teammates in a friendly paintball game. Meals are served buffet style and can be tailored to your group’s needs and budget. The on-site dining facility features a panoramic view of the Rhode River, as well as 6,000 square feet of floor space for fun, dining or meetings. After your meal, wander outside to the viewing deck, sit in one of our many rocking chairs and watch the sun set over the water’s edge.
